RVDA and ORVDA advocating for “maximum flexibility” for dealers
RVDA and ORVDA are advocating to provide dealers with maximum flexibility to keep repair operations open to protect the supply chain. We have formally requested that the provincial government exempt RV dealerships and maintenance, repair, and parts facilities from the mandatory shutdown.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the governments of PEI, New Brunswick and Quebec have already exempted automobile repair from the mandatory shutdown.
The current list of essential workplaces exempted from mandatory closure by the government of Ontario is available here.
Last week, the government of Ontario introduced and passed emergency legislation, Employment Standards Amendment Act (Infectious Disease Emergencies), 2020 to immediately provide job-protected leave to employees in isolation or quarantine due to COVID-19, or those who need to be away from work to care for children because of school or daycare closures.
The legislation, passed on March 19th, provides job protection for employees unable to work because the employee is:
- under medical investigation, supervision or treatment for COVID-19
- acting following an order under the Health Protection and Promotion Act
- in isolation or quarantine
- acting under public health information or direction
- directed by the employer not to work
- required to provide care to a person for a reason related to COVID-19 such as a school or day-care closure.
Employees are not required to provide a medical note if they take the leave. These measures are retroactive to January 25, 2020, the date that the first presumptive COVID-19 case was confirmed in Ontario.
Economic update and additional business support
Last week, Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance, announced that instead of a full Budget, the government of Ontario will release an economic and fiscal update on March 25th based on its best understanding of the current situation. It will include a realistic one-year outlook based on current economic projections.
That update is expected to include more targeted measures for businesses.
We will continue to provide updates as more detailed information becomes available.
